A Genre-Crossing Musical Extravaganza
Davies After Hours is a unique post-concert party that connects classical music to pop, jazz and other musical genres that flourish in the Bay Area. Concertgoers can party on the top floor of Davies Symphony Hall – transformed into an elegant nightclub with smashing views of City Hall, open-air balconies, and specialty drinks at the cash-only bar – while listening to groups play music inspired by that night’s Symphony program. This event is free to all ticket holders.

March 8
Concert performance: MTT and Yuja Wang: Adams, Beethoven, Brahms
Davies After Hours performer: Tin Hat
The featured Davies After Hours artists on March 8 are the Tin Hat ensemble (Carla Kihlstedt, violin and voice; Mark Orton, guitar; Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Rob Reich, accordion and piano). Tin Hat’s musicians describe their artistry as “freewheeling chamber music,” and the New York Press has hailed the group for “interweaving Old World Europe with post-modern America, south-of-the-border sensuality with concert-hall propriety, and odd-metered syncopation with deeply soulful grooves.”
May 10
Concert performance: Beethoven Project: MTT and Missa Solemnis
Davies After Hours performer: Meklit & Quinn
Singer-songwriter Meklit Hadero, a Senior TED Fellow and deeply involved pioneering force in San Francisco’s artistic scene, is a global tapestry of musical and cultural influences. Her music blends New York jazz and West Coast folk with traditional Ethiopian and much more. “She sings about fragility, hope, and self-empowerment, and exudes all three,” (SF Chronicle), offering her messages in a voice as sensuous and original as it is stunning. Equally at home across genres, Quinn DeVeaux is a commanding frontman who turns out remarkable original work filled with joy, grit and irresistible beats. A catchy crossroads of Chicago blues and New Orleans soul and gospel, he is packing in Bay Area dance floors and beyond.
June 28
Concert performance: West Side Story in Concert
Davies After Hours performer: Squid Inc. Strings
Squid Inc. is made up of some of the Bay Area’s fiercest string players and will open your ears as the world of popular music dances with classical tradition. The ensemble Squid Inc. (Hrabba Atladottir, Jory Fankuchen, Darcy Rindt, and Beth Vandervennet) plays both original tunes and original, unusual arrangements of popular music.
